Richard B. Hovey, BEd, MA, PhD, is an associate professor with the Division of Oral Health and Society, Faculty of Dentistry, McGill University. With a diverse background in educational research and healthcare Dr. Hovey’s research utilizes applied philosophical hermeneutics and phenomenology to concentrate on bridging gaps among theories, philosophies and practices in healthcare, communities, and individuals. Five years-ago a serious accident during a cycling commute home changed his perspective from chronic pain researcher to a man living with chronic pain. HOMEBASE combines both his professional and personal understandings.

“One must rise by that by which one falls” – Hevajra Tantra

Tantra is alchemy, transmuting “lead” into “gold,” in my case, turning chronic pain into a positive force in my life.

Pain took control of my life early, in my late teens, quickly robbing me of a full life, my friends, my dream of a career as a concert pianist.  It progressed quickly and drove me to seek any relief I could find, self-medicating with disastrous results.  Diagnosis was difficult since I didn’t fit into the neat little boxes of our medical system.  Fortunately, a couple of compassionate doctors got me to a livable state and from there I managed to start to turn it all around, physically and psychologically.

Now I live life one day at a time, sometimes moment-to-moment.  Pain is always there – it is my constant companion.  But strangely, I have learned to love my companion – I’ve turned it into a positive, driving force.  It lets me know how much alive I am – what the really important things are – what incredible beauty there is living in the “now.”  It has taught me acceptance, patience, empathy and compassion both for myself and for others.  I am ever-grateful for the ongoing support of my chronic pain group and my life-partner, Jacques.

Like some wise man said:  “Pain is part of life; suffering is optional.”

There are only solutions…

Homebase has been an amazing experience, that has really put me back on my feet. Working with the NDG Y was really a breakthrough for me. Going to the gym and participating in the adaptive programs, started me on a wonderful journey of rediscovery of my physical capacity which really facilitated my immersion into activities of all kinds with new and old friends not to forget what really made a difference for me. The power of being part of something that is bigger than oneself has filled an emptiness in a most motivating manner. The opportunity to help others has also helped me so much I can’t get over it, if we all could come to such a great and wonderful realization, it’s sure to me that not only our community would be a better place, and by extension the world.

I am truly grateful for the opportunity to participate in an organization that is building, expanding and spreading the light of compassion, understanding and companionship to men of pain, suffering often in deep circles of isolation.

If you allow yourself the opportunity of finding positive ways of coping and tools for overcoming whatever you are facing, the possibilities will open up to you. Connecting with just one person has the potential to change your life!

It has been a very positive experience to discover inspiring people and seeing our vision grow through dedication and the common goal of helping others through HOMEBASE.

It is only when we stand up, with all our failings and sufferings, and try to support others rather than withdraw into ourselves, that we can fully live the life of community’’ – Jean Vanier

I like being part of things that are bigger than me – more important than myself. This way we can achieve things much greater than we otherwise could.

Working with HOMEBASE has given me a stronger sense of purpose. I know that with HOMEBASE I will be able to help many people through my experiences. I have no doubt it will do the same for others.

Help others

The best part about HOMEBASE has been the bonding experience and the excitement of watching an idea grow into reality.

After we survive the slow painstaking recovery, after acceptance replaces anger, sadness, and fear.

We start to realize where your priorities lie, soon after we discover new ways to persevere…

It’s so important to realize we all have it in us, that instinct to survive.

You will find purpose, it will push you to thrive…

You are strong, you are smart.

True strength does not come from muscle, true strength comes straight from the heart…

You’re never alone.

You’re a survivor!

Fight on!
